Energy Credit On Windows

Energy Credit On Windows

Question: Can an in home daycare take the energy credit for new windows?

My friend hired someone to do her taxes but he is not doing them very well. Didn’t ask her about her itemized deductions, etc. Ok, so now on to the new windows. Used the sales tax from the invoice to deduct on the worksheet for the general sales tax. Big uncertainty here is this: Can she take the energy credit for the windows on her home even though she uses that same home as an in home daycare?

Answer: Her home is a daycare? I’m unsure of how that would work. There would be several other questions I’d have to ask to determine the status of her home and/or business.

Tax Credit Build House

Tax Credit Build House

Question: New homeowner tax credit question…?

We are closing on our house in March of 2009. Does that mean that we will get the tax credit this year (2009) when we file our taxes? Or in 2010? PS……we are building our house and construction began on it in September 2008.

Answer: You will receive the tax credit for the year in which you officially close and take possession of the property. Just make sure you keep good documentation of all escrow paperwork and receipts. I still have mine and I bought 20 years ago.

Question: International Student Tax Issues?

I am working International Student (F1 visa) who is under Curricular Practical Training (CPT). I am non resident alien and not paying social security and medicare taxes.
1)Can i Claim Tax Credits for tution payments I paid to refund some of income taxes paid;
2)which forms other than 1040 EZ NR should i fill out
3) if i cannot claim a credit, why? and if i can, where do i claim it in the form?
I should not fill out 1040 NR form because i am non resident alien and international student (F1). That’s what I was told. Who knows best about these regulations and forms? I need to claim a refund for Social Security and Medicare taxes paid last year, and probably need to fix filings for the previous year…

Answer: I don’t think you can claim these things on EZ forms. You need to fill out a regular 1040 NR. The 1040NR instruction booklet should tell you where to claim it, if possible.

Tax Credit Air Conditioner

Tax Credit Air Conditioner

Question: Which central air conditioner to buy??

The consumers guides only rate window a/c, not central units.
Government mandates, rebates, tax credits, SEER ratings, the ever changing reputations of manufacturers and other issues make buying a new central a/c a “shot in the dark”. The most expensive and energy efficient also seem to be most prone to lots of service after sale.
So you folks who have some real knowledge and experience are my last, best hope for guidance.
What do you say?

Answer: I would stay away from Lennox, and Carrier. Both are great units, but tend to be over engineered. Trane makes a good unit that is dependable as well as Rheem. Payne is actually made by Carrier but those units dont have all the bells and whistles that the Carrier unit comes with. Goodman makes a fair unit for the price, but they are in my opinion, for builders only-just to get something cheap that works inside the house. I put a Rheem unit in my own home and have had little problem with it. I did install it myself, and perhaps that is why I’ve had good luck with it. Whatever you do make sure you get the highest seer unit you can afford as it will pay for itself over the yrs. If I were to replace my unit today I would go with a Rheem or a trane setup. Hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless.
