Tax Breaks for Your Education Expenses

Medical Tax Credit

Medical Tax Credit

Question: is there a tax credit on the medical part of 2007 tax form for buying a car to accommodate a wheelchair?

Answer: Just as an automobile does not qualify for a deduction for non-handicapped taxpayers…you’ll not be able to deduct the entire cost of the car simply because one is required to use a wheelchair.

If, however, you had to outfit the car with special features to accomodate your handicap (hand controls, lift gate, special door), those additional expenses would be deductible to the extent your total medical expenses exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. Not the whole car…just the additional expenses to permit it’s use by one who is medically handicapped.

Hope this helps.

Question: What do you think of Republicans screewing us again for big oil companies?

The tax changes would have channeled $11 billion over 10 years into development of renewable fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and power from wind turbines. It provides an additional $18 billion in other tax breaks — from tax credits to clean and renewable energy bonds — to support improvements in energy efficiency, clean coal technology, development of gas-electric hybrid cars that could be plugged into the national power grid and other alternative energy programs.

Major oil companies would have paid most of the tab.

REPUBLICANS REJECTED THE CHANGE AGAINST DEMOCRATS 57YES-34-NO VOTES….60 VOTES NEEDED TO PASS

Answer: The first thing that should pop into any sensible person’s head when the Dem’s want to tax the oil companies is higher gas prices. Why do they not reduce the state and federal taxes on gasoline? You also (evidently) are not old enough to buy your own food, ethanol (a hoax) is driving the food prices up. Food is rising faster than gasoline.

Economic Recovery Tax Credit

Question: HIGHER Education Tax Credit-Economic Recovery Plan?

Higher-education tax credits that will be included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan (H.R. 598). The “American Opportunity” tax credit.

I’ve called the numbers provided from the IRS and have not made any progress. I know what the tax credit is but I dont know how to find a form or figure out how much I could receive. Does anyone know what to do? This would help me out a lot with school.

Answer: The form should still be 8863 but we won’t get the form details until late this year. In the mean time, here are details of the change:

“The American Opportunity Credit is not available on the 2008 returns taxpayers are filing during 2009. The new credit modifies the existing Hope Credit for tax years 2009 and 2010, making the Hope Credit available to a broader range of taxpayers, including many with higher incomes and those who owe no tax. It also adds required course materials to the list of qualifying expenses and allows the credit to be claimed for four post-secondary education years instead of two. Many of those eligible will qualify for the maximum annual credit of $2,500 per student.

The full credit is available to individuals whose modified adjusted gross income is $80,000 or less, or $160,000 or less for married couples filing a joint return. The credit is phased out for taxpayers with incomes above these levels. These income limits are higher than under the existing Hope and Lifetime Learning Credits.”

Hybrid Tax Credit 2010

Hybrid Tax Credit 2010

Question: What are the details on the Ford tax credit?

Does anyone know what is going on with the tax credit being offered by the Feds for Ford? I met with 4 dealers over the week looking to by the 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid; the dealers are claiming the vehicles are at least two weeks out. One of the dealers confirmed that they had sold one 2010 Fusion to the City Mayor. But I see a timing issue with the end date on the tax credit and the date in which the vehicles will actually be available. Am I the only one seeing this or do I just not have a good understanding on how the credit is applied? Any insight on this would be much appreciated.

Ford Tax Credit Info can be found here:

Answer: If you purchase a qualified hybrid vehicle during 2009, you will be able to take a credit on your 2009 taxes. Honda and Toyota no longer have the credit because they have sold too many vehicles since the beginning of the credit. Talk to a tax advisor for the exact amount that you will be able to take next year.
