Question: Is $140,000 annual salary “enough” for a family of 5?
I found this question interesting yesterday as most who answered it said “absolutely.” Let me make sure everyone understood the question. $140,000 per year gross will net you about $84,000 per year or $7,000 each month. Now let’s subtract:
$300 for 401K retirement contributions
$800 for family health ins assuming employer pays balance
$200 for family dental ins assuming employer pays balance
$1,400 for mortgage, homeowners ins & taxes
$750 for 1 minivan and 1 economical car
$200 for auto ins on both cars
$1,000 for food
$400 for gas in both cars
$75 for Christmas/Holiday fund
$300 for savings
$200 for electric
$200 for heating/air conditioning
$175 for phones/cell phones
$125 for cable/internet
$75 for trash pickup
$200 for entertainment
$200 for vacation savings
$75 for life ins on each parent
$150 for credit card debtThat leaves our family with $175 each month for emergencies! So get that college education and the best job you can. Money doesn’t go very far!
Answer: Interesting analysis. It certainly shows that even with what would be considered a “high” income, you have to watch where your money goes. I’d question some of your numbers ($200 for electric and $200 for heating/AC? Not even in expensive California — I pay about $100 for both per month)…but the point is well taken. Everyone needs to:
a) analyse where their money goes, and squeeze dollars where they can
b) make sure the “savings” part works hard, and doesn’t just sit in a bank account making 2%
c) pay off those credit cards and don’t charge any more!Nice analysis.
America is Chugging Along
Sometimes, I think to myself, that I’d rather jump into a pool with live hair dryers than listen to another White House official or DC politician give another doom and gloom talk about how the U.S. is in the worst recession since the Great Depression.

Question: Can someone explain the apparent american infatuation with tax breaks?in light of our crumbling infrastructure?
Is there a disconnect somewhere?
depleted military, health care issues, porous border, need of renewable energy, soon to be bankrupt social security etc..
???Do you think americans are delusional???
and believe in ignoring spending money on things that are really needed unless its just an ouright emergency and even then just pay for it on a credit card???
thanks sewious..for helping make my point…about americans being delusional. “the military and border are the only things that need our collective attention” LMAO…ROFL.
whose collective attention do other things require? Martians???Answer: That’s because the private sector is what runs the economy, and not the government. Private spending vs. Govt spending.
Government can’t help the economy by “spending money on thigns that are really needed”. This spoiled generation always thinks there is something we NEED to buy or spend money on. The best thing government can do with the money it steals from the public is to give it back to them and let them control how it is spent, the public always does a better job spending money than the government. Did you know that out of ever dollar spent on welfare, only 20 or 30 cents actually go to those who need it? Whereas in a church, at least 90% goes to people who need it.
The only big things the government really needs to spend money on collectively is the military, schools, and roads. And even many libertarians don’t support publicly funded roads and education.
There is nothing wrong with the govt giving money back to the people, in fact it is the right thing to do. Especially when you have a government who mismanages how money is spent. The sooner the public has money to spend, the sooner the economy will get back in shape. There are also a lot of other factors, obviously, but the bottom line is businesses need buyers.
