Question: How much does it cost to replace existing home air conditioner with an energy star unit?

I live in Florida and have a two story townhouse (approx 1100 sq ft). My current a/c is 15 years old and looks like it ‘s on it’s last leg. How much would it cost to replace the unit to an energy star one (15 seers right?). I hear 3k for a 13 seer but I imagine it’s more to get the tax credit.

Answer: Go to hvacopcost.com this will give you an idea how much you will save by going to the higher efficiency unit. Then factor in the bottom line tax credit of $1500 (which can be taken over 3 years) and you will find that it makes a lot of sense to get the higher efficiency model. Plus, if you sell you home it is a good feature to sell on. I do not foresee energy prices dropping and so it makes so much sense to get higher efficiency units.

Rush Is On For Federal Energy Tax Incentives

Question: Can my friend qualify for the energy tax credit on her home she’s temporaily renting to a friend?

She is selling her home, but the market was bad in our community as of lately so she decided to wait. In the meantime, a friend of hers needed a place to stay & it made sense to rent it out til she sold it in order to cover the mortgage payment. She had a qualifying heat pump installed & now is uncertain of being able to claim the tax credit because of renting it out to her friend. She just began renting it in september of this year, before that she lived in the home herself still. I’d appreciate answers that are researched, or someone who’s had the same situation. Please reference your source when responding. Thank you.

Answer: The energy credit is only good for primary residences. She can use it as a rental deduction. Most likely she would have it as a depreciable expense. I hope she talked to a tax pro before she rented out her house.
