Question: Any first time home buyers advice?

I’m currently in the process of purchasing a home. Trying to beat the clock for the 09 tax credit. Keep in mind I’m in what is considered rural areas in the midwest. Even though it’s nothing like farmland. My question is does anyone know of any programs/grants that will help you with buying appliances and etc. for your new home, if you meet certain income guidelines?

Answer: There are actually a couple of options for you. Often, your power company will give you a discount for upgrading to more power efficient appliances, so this is worth checking out.

Also, the government is working on a program similar to Cash for Clunkers, except it is Cash for Appliances. The major difference is that each state must come up with their own plan, but I think only a few have submitted plans so far.

When all is said and done, the discount for Cash for Appliances should be around $50 to $200, but it will vary state by state.

Further, since you said you were interested in moving to a rural area, some states offer rural loans, similar to the First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit, so this is definitely worth looking into. This is often done county by county.

Clock Ticks For Homebuyer Tax Credit

Question: My central air/heater has gone out. I have no money for dealing with this.?

I’m using three space heaters I have, for the moment.
(They) say I make too much money for a grant. It only looks like I make good money, After federal taxes , etc, I only bring home abt 24,000 a year. After morgage, insurance, car, electric,water, etc I have no extra. I don’t have a big house, it is a 25 year old small cheap fox & jacob. I have no equity. I don’t waste money on special stuff. One look at my place and you know I don’t buy luxurious stuff. My credit sucks. No credit cards. Its only me, no spouse, but no kids either so I don’t look helpless or qualify for help that way. HELP! Where do I turn? , and no, I don’t attend a church. My health isn’t the best, which is why I’ve put off getting a second job..
I’m in texas by the way in the dallas area if you know of something /someplace local that could help.
Any idea’s? Real suggestions please! I don’t know where to turn.

Answer: Contact your local utility companies. You may not qualify for a HEAP type program, but they should be able to help you out – you can also try the PUCO if the utility company can’t help you.

Beyond that, there are programs like Interfaith Home Maintenance that is designed to help people in need – One caveat though, I’m not sure what the income guideline actually is for a program and and you may make too much money (sick, I know, but true!).

If you need help getting referred through organizations, try a Catholic Charities, Protestant Family Services, Salvation Army or even your local United Way – they should be able to point you in the right direction.

If all else fails, contact your local Help Hotline – available in most cities (I’m not sure about yours) by dialing 211, and they may also be able to help you.
