Tax Credit Deduction Difference

Tax Credit Deduction Difference

Question: Can I deduct Cafeteria Plan Medical Expenses on my 2008 Tax Return?

To be clear, I am not talking about the portion that my company covers rather i am talking about the amount that i pay. As an example, i get a Flex Credit from my company on my pay stub and it is added to by income total. Then my Medical total, Dental and life totals are deducted (Pre Tax) then all other tax and deduction are made.

Am I allowed to count the difference in my allowance and actual (about $100 a month) toward out of pocket medical expenses, in efforts to get to the 7.5% required to deduct?

Answer: If it’s not taken out pre-tax, yes you could include it as part of your unreimbursed medical expenses. You would, obviously, have to itemize, and can only deduct the amount that’s over 7.5% of your AGI.

Question: What is fair pay for a part-time office manager/admin assistant in Detroit area?

I work 25 hours per week, so part-time is a “benefit” i guess. But I get no other benefits whatsoever. What do you think is a fair wage for my position of Office Manager (Administrative Assistant) in a small office in a Detroit suburb? My duties include: answering phones, handling customer questions, researching & resolving problems, invoicing customers, paying bills, accounts receivable, preparing & mailing letters/contracts, generating reports, monitoring, researching & ordering supplies, opening & sorting mail, preparing software and bindings, scheduling appointments, making cold-calls, monthly/quarterly/yearly tax reports & payments, preparing bank deposits, payroll, W-4s, W-2s, 1099-MISCs, making collection calls, processing credit card payments, admin assistant duties (i.e. order lunch, arrange travel for Pres), vacuum, wash windows & mirrors, empty wastebaskets, dust, clean desks, scrub toilets/sinks. Besides the minor computer & printer maint., I think I covered most of it

Answer: You sound more like an executive assistant. If you did that full time I would say $30-40k a year depending on how much of the business depends on your skills.

$15-19/hr

I’ve heard $13/hr is more common in that area. I’m down in Toledo but in your area all the time and I’ve talked to a number of office managers and admins.

Hi. I am confused on the new tax credit. I am a parent, but not of a college aged student. Can you claim it for yourself or only if you are supporting someone in college? Thanks!

Answer: So you are a adult college student is that correct?
Yes you can if you are a qualifying student and meet all of the rules that you have to meet to qualify you to claim any of the education benefits that are available to you.
The eligible student is either yourself, your spouse or a dependent for whom you claim an exemption on your tax return.
