Lifetime Learning Tax Credit 2009

Question: Can I get the American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit on my 2010 tax filing?

I have about 7,000 W-2 income in 2009. I am completing my AA and received a Pell Grant in 2009. Can I also apply for either of these credits on my taxes?

Answer: No, in order to get those credits you have to have paid for your schooling with your own money and if the Pell paid for all your costs, it was not your money. Sorry.
PS: You are doing your 2009 income tax return right now, not your 2010 one.
