Question: Do I have to earn an income to qualify for the tax credits covered under the Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act?

The Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009 allows tax credits for qualifying purchases. This year I have purchased a qualifying roof, and I am looking into buying a woodstove and tankless water heater. I have no income this year, and I need to know if I still qualify for these credits.

Answer: Sorry, but the residential energy credit is a non-refundable credit. This means it can be used to reduce your tax liability, but after reducing your tax liability to zero there is no further benefit. Since you have no income and thus no tax liability, you do not benefit from this credit.
