If you are looking for a place to rest your weary soul there are few options that will compare to the little piece of heaven known as Highlands, North Carolina. You can find this quaint little getaway in the southwestern corner of North Carolina nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. This area, which finds itself right in the midst of the Nantahala National Forest, is a sight to behold. Although the population in Highlands is only around a thousand people that changes during the tourism season when about 15 times that amount is drawn to the area for relaxation and recreation. That is a huge gathering but where did it all begin?

The town of Highlands, NC was created way back in 1875. It seems that these two fellows named Clinton Carter Hutchinson and Samuel Truman Kelsey were looking at the existing map and searching for a central area that might one day become a commercial crossroads with outstanding economic opportunity. The story has it that they began drawing lines from Baltimore to New Orleans and Savannah to Chicago and drew the conclusion that all these lines crossed the central area that was to become Highlands.

These two men were convinced that they had located an area that would one day become an outstanding trading Mecca. Well they may have been off just a bit and Highlands, North Carolina may have never become the envisioned trading location of their dreams. Instead it became a destination for tourism and travel. Ironically, it became a place where people could get away from the hustle and bustle of the great trading centers. The most important item traded in Highlands; North Carolina today is the exchange of stress for relaxation. One glance at the beauty that engulfs the Highlands area and your heart is forever attached.

Over the last 134 years people from all over the country have flocked to Highlands, North Carolina to get away from it all. There is something in that Appalachian Mountain air that seems to infiltrate the human condition and offer soothing relief from the problems that plague us on life’s great journey. Highlands allows us to become one with nature and ourselves once again. It provides the opportunity to slow down and do a little fishing, hunting or golfing. It reminds us what life is truly all about and that is a crossroads worth crossing.

Electric-car maker picks central Ohio for battery plant

A former telecom-equipment factory on the Far East Side might return to life soon making batteries for electric cars, holding out the promise of 1,000 new jobs. Electric-car manufacturer Coda Automotive said yesterday that it has chosen to open a battery plant in central Ohio, a move that is contingent on the approval of federal and state aid.

Decade had plenty of successes and several tragedies

The 10 years sandwiched between Dec.31, 1999 and today proved to be an eventful, productive and devastating decade in the Goshen area.Major building projects improved school and municipal facilities. A significant link of the C.R. 17 corridor came to fruition. Third Street in Goshen was given a facelift. These were some notable accomplishments for the area.

Answer: Yes, you are right, and that exemplifies the problem with taxation. It happens over, and over, and over again.

The government gets it off the top first, then the state. Then the sales tax, then the tax on car tags.

Then, when you die, after all your money has been taxed into submission, your children have to be taxed once again for inheriting it.

I t is not what our forefathers intended, not the ones who fought the British and established this country.

By the way, the radio is full of car dealers who are still owed as much as $750,000 from the “cash for clunkers” program.

They are about to go bankrupt.

The smart ones “opted out” soon after they realized that the money was dribbling as slow as maple syrup in Canada in the winter.

The bookkeeping was terrible, the oversight was worse, and these are the same people we would trust our health care to?

Hyundai annual sales increase 10 percent

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s largest automaker, increased sales 10 percent this year after a weaker won helped boost its marketing spending and stimulus measures globally spurred auto demand. Seoul-based Hyundai sold 3.1 million vehicles worldwide in 2009, Vice Chairman Youn Yeo Chul said today in a speech to company employees, the text of which was received by Bloomberg News in an e-mail.

Right now there are approximately 130,000 kids in foster care programs throughout the United States. These children are hoping to find a place they can call home, and people to call family.

Adults all over the country are attempting to expand their families by adopting a young person from a foster home. The process can be difficult and time consuming, but the end result brings joy to so many lives. It is a progression that is celebrated every November as National Adoption Month. This years’ theme is “Answering the Call – You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. There are thousands of teens in foster care who would love to put up with you.”

This celebration has earned the attention of the President. In October, Barack Obama recognized National Adoption Month with a Presidential proclamation. The document asserts that “During National Adoption Month, we honor those families that have strengthened America through adoption, and we recommit to reducing the number of children awaiting adoption into loving families.”

National Adoption Month’s origins trace back to 1976 when then-Governor Michael Dukakis established an Adoption Week in Massachusetts. President Gerald Ford became aware of this endeavor, and announced that the week would be recognized on a national level. By 1990 the event was expanded to a full month, and at the center of it all is National Adoption Day.

Saturday, November 21, 2009 will be National Adoption Day. It’s a day when law makers, judges, families and other adoption advocates work together to try and finalize as many adoptions as possible. 2009 marks the 10-year anniversary of this special occurrence and the goal is to find permanent homes for children in every state.
