I just do not understand the game of golf. Believe me…I have tried! I have no choice, since I have a sister and brother-in-law who are in love with the game of golf (personally…I feel they are addicted!). Their license plates reflect the love of the sport, their house if filled with golf memorabilia and even their wedding was on a golf course.

I have played once, in the rain and that was enough. I have tried watching golf on TV and have fallen asleep. As I am writing this article, I am yawning! To top it all off, my life partner played golf a couple of years ago and picked a golf club up for the very first time to get a hole in one! In his very first shot! Go figure…

My family knows better to not mention the “G” word around me! Last Christmas as a gag gift they gave me a small booklet titled “The Golf Instructor” detailing tips on golf, grips, drive, long run and chip shots! They all got a kick from seeing my face open up that gift!

Do not get me wrong. I appreciate the discipline of golf. One needs to only look at Tiger Woods to revel in his effortless swings and love of the sport. I admire people who are consistently beating their personal best, enjoying the great outdoors and clearly displaying a strong sense of fun and friendship.

During a burst of spring cleaning, I came across the golf booklet buried deep in my desk. Before I decided to throw it out, I looked through it. Something at the end of the booklet caught my attention and they were fundamental golf tips. Reading through the list, it seemed like the advice they offered not only can be applied to the game of golf, but to the game of life. There was one piece of advice that stood out from the rest and that is:

Never fear your shots, regardless of who is watching. Take a deep breath, relax, and swing with good tempo and rhythm. Never rush a shot, life is too short!

Well, run me over with a golf cart!? Who would have thought I would be enlightened over golf advice!! As I continued to read, they proceeded to offer some valuable tips that I substituted the word life instead of the word golf. It is sometimes amazing how things fit so easily. Check it out…

FLEXIBILITY

Life is not mastered in one season and it is particularly frustrating if we approach life with stiff and inflexible expectations. Great life begins with stretching, bending and loosening up. A sense of humour and a sprinkling of humility will go a long way in the game of life.

Life is a tough sport. It requires mental and emotional concentration. Silencing the inner critic after a “bad shot” is crucial to regaining your clear focus. This is an advanced skill to learn that can take you very far in life.

In life, instant success is very rare. Through daily practice, persistence and being open to listening to your mentors and coaches, you will tackle most of life’s tough challenges. In golf, and in life, practice smart. Practice for success! It pays off.

I hate to admit that I actually learned something from golf…but I did. These applicable golf tips of being flexible, having focus and practicing can actually be revised in a new book called “The Life Instructor!” I will not be going on a golf course anytime soon, but I have a newfound appreciation. If you adopt some of these principles in the game of life … I believe you will have a hole in one! A clear winner!

December rollout of Volt will skip TN

General Motors Co. will not include Tennessee in its initial rollout of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric car in December, but the state could get the car by 2012, the automaker said.

Carthage council advances lease-purchase of golf carts

Players at the Carthage Golf Course will have new rides next year after the City Council on Tuesday night advanced a plan to buy 50 new gas-powered golf carts. The panel approved a motion from the public services committee to accept a bid on the carts of $105,675 from Clear Creek Golf Cart of Springfield.

The deadline to apply to the IRS Voluntary Disclosure Program now over; however U.S. taxpayers still can file a voluntary disclosure under the IRS normal procedures.

In 2009, the IRS and U.S. Department of Justice began its highly publicized investigation into Swiss bank UBS AG and U.S. accountholders who hid these assets from the U.S. Government. However, the investigation did not end with UBS. The IRS made it clear that offshore tax evasion is still a top enforcement priority. The Department of Justice has gone after taxpayers regardless of the amount—even taxpayers with assets of $20,000 or less in offshore accounts.

U.S. taxpayers with offshore assets and accounts are legally bound to disclose these interests to the U.S. government on their Form 1040, U.S. Individual Tax Returns, and file a corresponding Form TD F 90-22.1, Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR). If IRS agents uncover that a taxpayer has not reported an interest in an offshore account or income accruing on such accounts during the course of an audit, the IRS may impose excessive penalties including the greater of $100,000 or 50% of the offshore account balance for willful failure to file an FBAR for each account. These penalties, compounded with interest and fraud penalties, can essentially wipe out the taxpayers foreign assets. In addition, taxpayers could be vulnerable to criminal prosecution and jail time for tax evasion.

The IRS announced in March of 2009 the creation of the IRS Voluntary Disclosure Program to motivate taxpayers to come forward and disclose their offshore accounts in exchange for lesser fines and the promise not to refer the case for criminal prosecution. As an outcome of the pressure on UBS and other offshore banks, thousands of U.S. taxpayers with previously undisclosed offshore accounts took advantage of the Voluntary Disclosure Program and applied before the October 15, 2009 drop dead date.

Although it may be too late to apply to the IRS Voluntary Disclosure Program, there is still time to file a voluntary disclosure under the IRS regular guidelines. There are a many positive outcomes to filing a voluntary disclosure as it is far better to disclose to the IRS than to have the IRS discover you. Almost identical with the Voluntary Disclosure Program, a traditional voluntary disclosure also allows taxpayers with previously undisclosed foreign accounts with a way out—potentially dodging the most severe civil fines and criminal prosecution.

Furthermore, those U.S. taxpayers with undisclosed offshore accounts should be aware the voluntary disclosure process is complicated and sensitive. U.S. taxpayers are encouraged to contact a tax attorney who is skilled at resolving disputes with the IRS as soon as possible to determine whether or not to file a voluntary disclosure with the IRS.

For example, if a U.S. taxpayer has already been investigated and contacted by the IRS, it may be too late to file a disclosure. Therefore, time plays a significant factor as the IRS continues its pursuit of undisclosed offshore account holders. The window of opportunity is closing on the ability to receive the reduced penalties and possible incarceration for those who file. Seeking the advice of proper counsel truly is in their best interest.
