Question: Tax credits for full time students?

I am 25 and in college full time (online courses so that I can still work PT). I didn’t make much for 09… I think it was maybe around $5,000. I know I am able to claim my son on my taxes, but are there any additional tax credits that I can get for being a full time student? Just curious…

Answer: If your school is an eligible institution (and mails you a 1098 showing the tuition you paid) and you paid for the tuition from your own money, you can look at the new American Opportunity Credit. It’s partially refundable–though full details are not available yet.

Question: Child and working tax credits ?

Hi me and my husband are due to have our baby in September and we were told by family that once the baby is born we can claim for tax credits, we live with my parents at the moment, will this effect our claim or not as my hubby still pays tax, I did a thing saying do I qualify and filled out the form online and it did say my husband will qualify for child tax and working tax credits.

So will be still get it even thought we live with someone else ?
Hi It doesnt ask on the form for your address or if you live with someone, the only time it says anything about living with a person is if that a person in your house hold is disabled, which there isnt in our house hold.

Im not sure if it matters where you live as my brother who lived at home was told he could claim tax credit by the job centre if he worked more that 30 hours and they new he lived at home.

Answer: You are correct where you live does not generally matter. Obviously if you live with a partner this is relevant but not other people.

They ask the question about disability as this can lead to more tax credits.

My income is lower by about £1500 than the previous tax year so how will that work with the paymentss this year?

Answer: Have you spoken to the tax credits helpline to see if they have received it? They my have a post backlog. A lot of people renew via telephone these days as its much quicker ! If your income is lower then this will probably have an impact but you will only know the exact amount once finalised.
