Question: How much does it cost to replace existing home air conditioner with an energy star unit?

I live in Florida and have a two story townhouse (approx 1100 sq ft). My current a/c is 15 years old and looks like it ‘s on it’s last leg. How much would it cost to replace the unit to an energy star one (15 seers right?). I hear 3k for a 13 seer but I imagine it’s more to get the tax credit.

Answer: Go to hvacopcost.com this will give you an idea how much you will save by going to the higher efficiency unit. Then factor in the bottom line tax credit of $1500 (which can be taken over 3 years) and you will find that it makes a lot of sense to get the higher efficiency model. Plus, if you sell you home it is a good feature to sell on. I do not foresee energy prices dropping and so it makes so much sense to get higher efficiency units.

Question: what would happen? can HSBC seize his tax’s refund or just denied the loan against his ttax’s?

my brother wants to file his tax’s at H & R block and apply for the loan the problem is that he owes the bank they use HSBC for a credit card (the card was close last may) it was a best buy card.

Answer: Yes, in this case they CAN and WILL seize his refund. When you apply for the loan service, the fine print alerts you that they will offset any funds you owe to them/their bank. It IS legal, because they warn you about it.

Your brother should just file his taxes himself, wait on the refund if he is getting one. He would most likely not be approved for the loan anyway, AND they are goign to charge an exorbitant amount if he is (and likely he will not get the money).
