Tax Education Credit 2009

Tax Education Credit 2009

Question: I qualified for $1,000 education credit on my taxes, but it disappeared because of my age?

I was filing my taxes on Turbo Tax, and because I was a full-time student I had qualified for $1,000 education credit. I answered questions on my age, if a parent was alive December 31, 2009 (which both of mine are alive) and I don’t know what happened but the $1,000 disappeared like that *snap*! I needed that money for my education, and now it’s gone. I have been on my own since I was 18, I am going to be 23 on Sunday, and I’m getting married in like two weeks. What the heck? How can I get that $1,000 back???

Answer: Education credits do not depend on your age, but they do depend on your status as a dependent or not.

Check your dependency status on your tax return. Did Turbo Tax make you a dependent?

I don’t see why your parents being alive has anything to do with your taxes. It seems like Turbo Tax asked if your parents were alive and since they were, Turbo Tax made you a dependent. Carefully check all the answers to your questions.
