Energy Tax Credit Appliances

Question: What documentation is needed for tax credits?
I bought a house this year that needed a great deal of renovation. I’m entering the 3rd month of construction and I’m starting to purchase the things I believe will be eligible for tax credits – windows, energy star appliances. Is the contract for replacement enough or what type of documentation should I get from my contractor?
Answer: Contract, invoice, cancelled check. Whatever you can get. But, you only need any documentation if the IRS audits you. Otherwise, it’s on the honor system.
