Question: My partner and I live in Scotland and our landlord always wants cash for rent…?

We have now lived here for about 3 months. We pay £650per month andhe wont take the rent any other way. We have asked to set up a direct debit or cheque but he only takes cash. Upon moving in he got my details and had a bit of paper which said it was from some internet company to do credit checks but told us he wasnt bothered about that just wanted my name, work deatails etc.
He does give us a reciept each month (A bit of paper with his address printed at the top and signs the amount paid and the date)> But its such a hassle having to take that kind of money and walk home from the bank. Could he not be paying tax? If not can we get into trouble for this? Thanks

Answer: Yes he probably is evading taxes which he will get caught sooner or later. If he wasn’t evading taxes he would at least accept a cashiers check or money order.

Question: We want to move to Sun Valley, CA to attend TMS (Bible Seminary) but live in Quebec, Canada!! Any wisdom?

We were initially thinking of going on a student visa but then again, if Mark could work at a Christian school (he’s a Phys Ed teacher at a public school right now) then our three kids could probably attend free of charge… Working visas are harder than student visas, minus the perks, I believe… (Like child tax credit continuing when just a student, etc.)

Answer: I am not qualified to tell you which way is best for you but I definitely know that if you can not get a good theological education in Canada then southern California has some good choices as in Azusa Pacific College, Fuller seminary and Biola. See if you can get admitted to a school you want and have your needs met and the Lord will open the right doors for you. I think it really depends on what you want to accomplish assuming you get the theological training you want and if that is God’s will for you.

Question: Working Tax Credit Overpaid?

Hi,

My mum has been overpaid on hre working tax credit from April 08-April 09. It was their fault by entering incorrect data. My mum wrote she earned 12,800 from that year and received £3000 in the bank, because she wrote the form out correctly she had confidence the money in the bank was correct however it turns out that HMRC had her down as earning £128.00 from the year and put the decimal point in the wrong place.

My mother no longer has this money and i am concerned she will be asked to repay it back immidiately however it was entirely their clerical error and my mum shouldnt have to struggle because of their admin error.

Has this happened to anyone else? was was the outcome? What shall i say in the letter to make them reconsider askingus to pay it in full?
xxxxxxxxxx

Answer: Your mun can ask for a tribunal hearing, it she can prove that the error was ‘officer error’ it is not repayable

Tax Credit Government

Tax Credit Government

Question: How does the Federal government finace tax credits?

Answer: It has been the fiscal policy of the federal government (as far back as I have been doing taxes) that tax law changes have to be zero cost. This means that when they provide a tax credit or tax deduction, the estimated “cost” to the government due to the reduction in tax revenues has to be offset by increases in tax revenues in some other area, either through an increase in taxes or doing away with deductions, so that the net cost of the tax legislation is zero.

Where the taxpayer gets the short end of the stick is typically, tax credits and tax deductions that are enacted by legislation are temporary and will expire within a certain time frame (i.e. the sale tax deduction was set to expire on December 31, 2005). However, many of the tax changes made to “pay” for these tax credits and deductions did not have a similar expiration date and are considered permanent. So when an expired credit or deduction comes up for renewal, tax increases elsewhere needs to be made to pay for this, even though the tax increases that funded the expired credit or deduction is still in place.

A good example of this is the research and development tax credit that corporations can use to claim a tax credit for their R&D expenses. The credit was never made a permanent credit, and Congress kept extending it. However, every time the credit came up for extension, they increased taxes to pay for it.
