Child & Dependent Care Tax Credit

Child and dependent care tax credit or credit for child and dependent care expenses are claimed less than child tax credits. However, many taxpayers get the child and dependent care tax credit confused with the child tax credit or even the additional child tax credit. The child and dependent care tax credit is very different from the child tax credit. People sometimes refer to child and dependent care tax credit as just child care credit or child care tax credit.

 

Is the child and dependent care expense tax credit a refundable tax credit?

The child & dependent care tax credit is, like child tax credit, a nonrefundable tax credit. The amount of the child and dependent care tax credit cannot exceed your tax on line 46 of the 1040 form.

 

What is dependent and child care tax credit and how to claim it?

In order to claim the credit for child and dependent care expenses:

  1. you have to pay someone to care for our child or other dependent so that you can work.

  2. you must meet several requirements to be able to take this child and dependent care expenses tax credit.

  3. you must complete and attach the tax form 2441, Child and Dependent Care Expenses.

 

You then have to calculate the amount of the credit you can subtract from your tax. Child and dependent care tax credit is reported on line 47 on tax form 1040.
